There are three major credit reporting agencies. They are:

Creditors, such as mortgage companies, banks, department stores, etc., provide information to the credit bureaus. Creditors will provide information about you such as:

  • Type of account you have (credit card, auto loan, mortgage, etc.)
  • Date you opened the account
  • Credit limit or loan amount
  • Account balance
  • Payment history
  • Each time you apply for credit

Each time you apply for credit, creditors may provide updates to the personal information section in your credit report.


Credit bureaus also collect public record information about you. This type of information includes, but is not limited to:

  • Bankruptcy filings
  • Overdue child support
  • Unpaid tax liens
  • Foreclosures
